Garage to playroom

Ever thought of converting your garage into a playroom for your children? One employee working at Garaga did. She put those thoughts in action and the results were amazing! With the help of colourful paint, kids’ toys and space savers, she was able to create a comfortable, and fantasy like room for her kids to play in.

These answers could help you create a garage playroom area of your own. See how you can do everything in just a few days!

Q: Why would I create a playroom in my garage?

A: Sure, a garage is a place meant to park your vehicles, but why not change that and create a space of your own. Isabelle and her partner were lucky enough to have two garages and therefore decided to designate one as a place to park their cars and another as their children’s playroom.

Isabelle lives right by a boulevard and a busy school street. They have a backyard with a few trees, but whenever her son played sports such as soccer or baseball, he would always lose his ball or would be refrained from playing because of the snow or cold temperatures during winter. She wanted to create a space where her son could play inside, all year round, and most importantly, without damaging anything in the house.

Q: Will my garage be warm enough through the cold, harsh winter season?

A: It all depends on the quality of your garage door. Isabelle is well equipped with a GARAGA garage door. Her door is a Cambridge, it has a thermal resistance of 16 which is very good for her garage insulation. She told us she never had any problems with the cold during winter. But she also told us that at the very beginning of her transformation, she was also worried about the cold temperatures and decided to add a heating system just in case she needed it in the future.

Q: Is the garage door opener/remote in reach of your children?

A: The garage door opener control bottom is on the wall by the entrance door and could possibly be reach by children if they stand up very tall or use a chair. But something the kids may not know, is that if they press the garage door opener bottom, nothing will happen. Isabelle and her husband had the genius idea to disconnect it, avoiding any unwanted accidents.

Their garage door can still be opened, but only manually, or electronically if they choose to reconnect their garage door opener.

Q: Is there a special type of paint I need to use for my concrete floors and walls?

A: Yes, there is a special type of paint for those jobs. They are available in any hardware stores and in some paint stores. Look for paint cans with “Concrete & Garage Floor Paint” written on it. These are available in a few variable colours and in many different brands.

Q: Where can I get my hands on wall stickers and accessories as such?

A: Storage Space: Ikea, Ikea, Ikea. Ikea is the simple answer! They are easy to assemble and very practical! These little mounted space savers can also be found at Walmart, Target, and many more places.

Puzzle Floor mats: Isabelle found her mats at Walmart, but you can try Toys R Us, Home Depot, Canadian Tires, or online on Amazon. These floor mats are extremely fun and convenient. They prevent your children from hitting their head too hard on the concrete if they were to trip and fall. They can hide your old greyish floor and give the room a nice, new look and they are extremely easy to clean!

Wall Stickers: They come in all shapes and sizes. Isabelle bought her stickers at Omer Desseres, a Canadian Arts and Crafts store where they sell dozens and dozens of them. If you live in the US, you can check at a Michaels or order some online.
