Garage Door: Choosing the Right One

Overwhelmed with all the products found on the market? With our many years of experience with garage doors, we can say with confidence that we know garage doors more than anyone in the business. Our employees here at Door Pro Inc. can advise you and guide you through your purchase. This is why we provided you with the most important components to look for when purchasing a new door.

1. Sealing and R-factor

Having a greater thermal resistance factor is ideal for anyone who has a workshop or a recreational area for kids in their garage. This allows you to maintain safe and comfortable temperatures for your garage and also, allows you the save a lot of money of your future energy bills.

2. Insulation Core

There are two types of insulation used for garage doors: polyurethane and polystyrene (Styrofoam). Know that the higher the R-factor on a garage door, the better the insulation. Polyurethane is the best performing insulation core. Front doors manufacturers use the same type of insulation, knowing it’s twice as efficient as styrene.

3. Method of Insulation

Polyurethane foam is injected under high pressure between the two walls of the door. In the case of polystyrene, it’s simply placed between the metal sheets. The injection of the polyurethane foam solidifies assembly and then sticks to the metal walls to provide a solid grip for a long time. This “composite” assembles significantly reduces air infiltration risks and sheet metal split.

4. Steel Thickness

The thicker the metal sheet of a garage door panel is, the more resistant to impacts the door will be. Thicker steel combined with polyurethane foam that fills the inside of each door panel creates sturdiness and a durability that is unbeatable.

5. Hardware Components

Hardware (tracks & springs) and steel components (rollers, nuts & so on) of a garage door are somehow the “skeleton” of the door. They’re in charge of its proper well-functioning. It’s essential that the hardware system of the door is robust and durable because it supports all the weight of the door and is the anchor point between the panels and the hinges of the door.

6. Thermal Breaks

It’s useless to have an isolated door if the door comes with 18-gauge steel caps at the edge of door sections which transfers the cold to the inside of the garage. Effective thermal breaks are very useful when you want to keep the cold winds out and to guarantee the best insulation performance from your door.

7. Rollers

Wheels on your garage door system are one of the parts that work the hardest. They carry the weight of your door and allow it to open and close every day. There are three types of wheels: nylon (Black) without ball-bearings, steel with ball-bearings and nylon (White) 11 ball-bearing. If you have a room above your garage, we suggest you go with the latest ones. These are quiet and efficient. Note also that for wheels with ball bearings, it’s always best to ask those with the most marbles. The best have eleven.

8. Exterior Weather Seal

For a complete protection against the cold, having an efficient weather-stripping system on the exterior frame of your garage door is a necessity. A good weather-stripping allows the door to guard effectively the wind, rain and snow from entering the garage. We need the weather-stripping to remain flexible even at temperatures of 140 F.

9. Electric Door Opener

There are two types of garage door openers, with chain or with belt. If you have a room above your garage, we suggest purchasing the rubber belt-drive for its quietness. Both are very good choices, it’s up to you which one you prefer

Purchasing a garage door is a very important decision and sometimes quite difficult. There are many aspects to think about and many technical terms to know. Here at Door Pro Inc., we have the best products on the market. Our garage doors stand the test of time and have been tested for durability and performance. We hope that you appreciated our key points on garage door shopping and hope you can make a decision you’ll be happy with and confident with.
