Should you cover your exterior door frame in aluminum?

4 reasons you should be covering your exterior garage door frame in aluminum

If you’ve got a wooden garage door, cladding the exterior door frame in aluminum can be a really great idea as it reduces the amount of maintenance and provides you with a much more durable door.

But first of all, here’s what you need to know. The aluminum used for this type of project is sold and rolls and used by companies that make exterior building components. You can either buy the aluminum yourself and take it to an aluminum products dealer to have them bend it to the dimensions of your door frame, which you would then have to fit, or you could contact a garage door specialist and have them do it for you.

We think it’s a great idea for these three reasons…

Low maintenance

Forget about spending hours re-staining or repainting your garage door. Aluminum is weather resistant and won’t fade or rust. All you’ll need to do is wipe it down with soapy water every once in a while.

Durability

Kiss rotten wood goodbye: The aluminum cladding acts as a protective layer to the wooden frame.

Attractive

First things first, think about the improved curb appeal, I mean, especially if you’re considering selling your home. Any real estate agent will tell you that houses with attractive garages sell much quicker than those with peeling paint! A garage door takes up 30‑40% of your home’s façade, so you want to make sure it looks as nice as possibly.

Secondly, you can get a really smooth seal between the aluminum cladding and the other exterior components by covering the joint between the weatherstripping on the frame and the exterior finish with a cold‑resistant sealant. A small finishing touch that will make all the difference!
